Objectifs
The overall objective of this course is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate fair, reliable, effective, and learner-centred ESL assessments. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- understand and apply key principles of validity, reliability, practicality, and washback in ESL assessment and differentiate between formative and summative assessments, and norm- and criterion-referenced frameworks,
- design and implement age- and proficiency-appropriate assessment tools for evaluating L2 listening, speaking, interacting, reading, and writing,
- incorporate portfolios, performance-based tasks, and communicative-oriented assessments into their teaching practices,
- integrate technology to create, administer, and analyze assessments effectively,
- evaluate and interpret assessment data to inform instructional practices and communicate results clearly,
- adapt assessments to address the diverse needs of ESL learners,
- reflect on ethical considerations (fairness, bias) and the practical implications (e.g., motivation and engagement) of language assessment in educational settings.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the principles, methods and techniques for evaluating learners in English as a Second Language (ESL) contexts. The course covers essential topics such as achieving high levels of validity, reliability and practicality, designing formative and summative assessments, and working within norm-referenced and criterion-referenced frameworks. Students will learn to create and implement age- and skill-appropriate assessment tools for evaluating L2 listening, speaking, interaction, reading and writing, including traditional tests, portfolios and performance-based tasks, within a communicative teaching framework. The course also emphasizes the integration of technology to effectively assess and analyze results and communicate them to students, parents and administrators.
