Description
The aim of the course is to increase the students' awareness of the phenomena of language and language use, particularly those relevant to educational contexts. Topics studied include the nature of human language; language used as a means of communication; language as a social phenomenon; sounds and sound systems; spelling and writing systems; word, phrase and sentence structure; word and sentence meaning; pragmatic aspects of language use. Language and paralanguage. Special emphasis is placed on the English language and on the diversity of language stuctures so as to allow a deeper understanding of their differences and similarities with regards to English.
