Description
This course focuses on the learning of English language varieties that are spoken throughout the world. It aims particularly at acquainting the student with different structures and cultures of each variety or group of varieties. The course considers four analytical approaches centered on geo-linguistics, socio-linguistics, typology, and case studies. Other topics covered are: the linguistic aspects dealing with language variety and the complex dynamics linking language and culture; English language varieties in the United Kingdom, North America, South-East Asia, West Africa, Oceania, the Caribbean, South Africa, East Africa, in the other Americas, and throughout the continent of Europe. Also introduced is the up-to-date documentary instructional method, which deals with the issue of language rights and the globalization of English.
